I had the pleasure of giving a talk at the Santa Cruz County Library in Scotts Valley, on Dec 18. The subject of the talk was two-fold - introducing the courses taught in the Astronomy Department at Cabrillo, and in how average citizens can contribute valuable science observations by timing occultations of star by asteroids and the moon. The talk dovetailed with a new program in the library system, of loaning out small telescopes. I hoped to excite people with what could be done with even small telescopes to add to scientific knowledge of asteroids, and show some adventures with my field classes and students in doing these events. I arrived at 5:30, the presentation began at 6:30 and lasted until 9pm.
