This Fall's Astro 8 class had good weather, and all students got a chance to get their chosen target photo'd. This gallery is ordered in the same order as the photo is submitted tome by email. Earlier is good!
Jonathan A. Photo and caption received on time. The Veil Nebula - Three five minute exposures were taken with the SBIG ST2000XCM through the 12” Meade telescope. The original images were taken at an altitude of +63 on a clear, dark and tepid night. Each image was dark subtracted, flat fielded and colorized using CCDOPS. All three corrected colorized images where stacked in RegiStax 5. The stacked image was edited in Photoshop CS2 by adjusting the levels to reduce the white noise. Color was boosted by adjusting the hue/saturation levels. The image was then cropped, resized and printed. |

Will G. - Received Mon Dec 10. His caption: i uploaded it into Gimp.com and tried to fix the pictures..I used curves to bring out more objects and colorized the picture with another gimp program. |
Global Cluster - Oct. 16, 2012 9:45PM Ragsac, Jackson (Received Dec 11) 2x5, ST2000xcm 12"Meade telescope. Two images with 5 minute exposure. Dark subtracted the image. In Registax 5 i used the alignment method. Dark subtracted both of my images Optic and stack image. In photo shop adjusted the contrast. Curve point moved slightly up. Changed the Hue and saturation by two levels. Then combined the two images and resized to specifications and printed at bay photos. |
Ben Meade: NGC 7023, Iris Nebula. (Received Dec 11). Three images of 300 second exposure. Taken 9/18/12 at 21:33:42. Taken with ccd ops 5.Dark subtracted at -20 degrees F. |
NGC 7331 October 7, 2012; Serena Kaveney, 3x5min, ST2000xcm on 12”f/6.3 Meade @ Cabrillo Observatory Caldwell 30 – I took three five minute exposures with the SBIG 2000-cm through the 12” Meade. My images were taken on a moonless and cloudless night for a 300 second exposure at -20 degrees Celsius. My images were dark frame corrected and flat fielded. Then colorized in CCDOPS5 using sRGB+gamma transfer function. Next I had to stack the images in Registax3, in order to do this I had to use a default alignment method by selecting an alignment star so that all three images would be aligned. After the image was stacked I opened it in in Photoshop. In Photoshop I adjusted the curves and levels of my images to reduce the highlights so that the center of my galaxy was more visible. I lightened the dimmer stars and reduced the luminosity of the really bright stars and reduced the noise of the image. I adjusted the contrast so that the blacks were not too black and the whites were not too white. Lastly I scaled the image to print it. |
3x5 minute exposures taken using ST2000xcm through 12" Meade telescope. Images were dark subtracted, flat fielded, and single shot color processed with RGB as method all on CCDOPS5. Saved files as 16 bit TIFF. Stacked images using Registax5. In photoshop, first cropped image from 16.68x22.23 to 16x20. Despeckled and upped Unsharp Mask up to 100% from 40%. Increased brightness and contrast to 80 and 100 respectively. Set gray point levels to .8 from 1.0 to take out excessive yellowing and to darken picture. Decreased brightness and increased contrast. Finally resized to 8x10.

Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)--November 13, 2012 Susi Iniguez 5x5min, ST200 XCM
12"f/6.3 Meade @Cabrillo Observation
Helix Nebula in the constellation Aquarius---5x5 minute exposure pictures taken at Aptos Cabrillo campus. Using CCDOPS, I had to edit each image. First I had to dark subtract the image, then after I had to add flat field to it. At this point you can now start seeing the image a bit clearer. Now its time to add some color, I added color by using sRGB+Gamma, my image is now looking more like a nebula. Now that I edited each image I'm ready to stack each image using Registax 5.1, we stack each image so we can get the perfect picture without any noise. While using photoshop I played around with the levels and curves a lot so my image can turn out just right, once I got it the way I wanted to I messed around with the lighting so I can really make my nebula stand out. To finish the picture off it was despeckled. Then BOOM ready to print. |
3x5 minute exposures taken with the SBIG 4000xcm through the Meade 12” in the Cabrillo Observatory. All 3 images were dark field corrected. The images were imported into CCDOPS were they were converted to color, corrected and filtered using sRGB + gamma. All images were imported into RegiStax 5 using the multipoint method. The now single picture was edited in Photoshop Elements. Noise reduction was used. Enhanced yellow and magenta and cropped.

Joseph McNally, 2x5 min, ST2000xcm
8" f/4 LXD75 @ Cabrillo Obs. Sent 12/11/12
Two, five minute exposures were taken with the SBIG 2000xcm
through the 8" Meade LDX75. Both images were flat field and then dark frame
corrected, then colorized using DDP. The images were then stacked in Registax5
using the default alignment method. The stacked image was edited in Photoshop 7
using the Astronomy actions: Deep space noise reduction x2, Lighten only DSO
and dimmer stars x1, and Enhance DSO and reduce stars x1. Luminosity was
altered through Levels, and Curves. Next Brightness and Contrast was adjusted,
lastly Hue, Saturation and Lightness were changed. The image was then scaled to
print.

Action: "Space noise reduction"
Image -> Adjustments: Curves (this seemed to reduce the background light noise pretty effectively)
Action: "Light pollution removal"
Crop: (to get it centered)
