Climate Talk and Panel Discussion for UCSC Faculty and Students

At the Center for Adaptive Optics - Science Hill, UCSC, Conference Center

(Here is the email announcement from UCSC's Kevin Bundy)...

Dear all,

Our own Alexie Leauthaud will be giving the colloquium this week on “The Climate and Biodiversity Crises.”  While not strictly astronomy, these topics demand increasing attention from all scientific communities.

Snacks will be served in the CfAO at 10:15am and we still start promptly at 10:40am.

After the talk, there will be an open discussion back at the CfAO beginning at 12pm, with pizza served. We will have a panel of experts who will answer your questions on these crises, and facilitate a general discussion on strategies for UCSC and more generally. Panelists Alexie Leauthaud and Richard Nolthenius

See you then!
Kevin

Colloquium
Wednesday, Nov 15th, 10:40am, Nat Sci Annex 101

Speaker:  Alexie Leauthaud

Title: The Climate and Biodiversity Crises

Abstract: In this talk, I will give a high level overview of the climate and biodiversity crises. This in an introductory level talk aimed at an audience of physicists and astrophysicists and is accessible to students and faculty alike. I will cover key vocabulary and figures from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) AR6 Synthesis report. My goal is for you to come away with a broad understanding of the most recent findings of the IPCC and to give you the foundations needed to read this document on your own, to understand the science,  and the urgency of our current predicament. For those interested, I will be organizing a follow-up zoom based guided reading of the IPCC synthesis report. For those interested in learning more about this topic, I have posted links and materials on my website.
