Preston predictions

This is a "sure thing" event with a large but fast moving asteroid and high rank, with Santa Cruz on the centerline. Clear skies mean we should get this easily, with the combined 11.35 magnitude image dropping 1.9 magnitudes to be dimly visible at magnitude 13.2.

I got a 3.50s event from upper UCSC. But, the camcorder failed to record - again! The ZR85 which has worked fine for the past several events, didn't. Temp in high 40's, no condensation, camcorder definitely warmer than outdoor temps. Not on that long before. Battery weak?? Playback shows nothing on tape, but playback on another ZR85 camcorder does show previous recordings just fine, but not this event. Luckily, I video'd the LCD screen with my Nikon, and used VLC to single step through and get the raw times of the D and R pretty accurately. Kirk watched from home, got the event as well, successfully recorded.

Here's the YouTube recording, compressed from the original .mov file. My report was filed, and checked by Jerry Bardecker on Jan 22.

Kirk Bender:
He observed from home, on the west side of Santa Cruz. About 4 miles away in the cross-track direction. I thought our timings might be almost identical, but in fact they differed. I'll be interested to see the SkyPlot. Kirk's event was only 2.95 seconds long. Here's his PyOTE log file
