The Occultation of an 11.3 star by Scheila

The path runs north of us, but with a wide enough uncertainty range to include Santa Cruz. Kirk and I plan to get it from Pescadero and the top of Stage Rd. Weather looks dry and clear, even on the coast. The magnitude drop is only 0.5, but the event duration is 11 seconds, which will allow some integration and still get good time resolution

Results:

I drove Kirk and myself up to Pescadero for Kirk, and the top of Stage Rd for me. We had mostly clear skies but clouds gave me some trouble. Lucky not at the moment of the occultation. We both got good reductions; 8.5s event for me and 7.4s event for Kirk. Karl had the VTI malfunction. Still trying to diagnose.

Got set up OK at the top of Stage Rd and Hwy 1. Some low fog/clouds came and went but mostly to the east of me. However, you can see some cloud interference during the 5 minutes of taping for the occultation. But, not during the actual 8s event.

Kirk Bender Results

Set up at the parking lot of the Pescadero Marsh. No trouble with clouds, but wind and scope drift were an issue. Recording survived both, and got good 7.4s event.
