The Occultation of a 10.3 Star by the Asteroid Cranach

July 3, 2022 at 1:27:37am

This event is in Aquarius, at 36 deg altitude and 148 Azimuth, in the SE. The target star is nice and bright, the duration is only 1.7s and so we should use 2x setting, or no integration. The rank is mediocre and Karl's place is on the southern limit. I plan to drive up there soon, he'll observe from home and I'll try it from Summit Rd/Mtn Charlie.

I joined Karl for the evening, and as occultation time approached, we watched in dismay as the fog rose and covered his 1600 ft elevation site. He was tempted to pack up and join me... but decided to stay and hope the fog might clear. It had a bit of a chaotic pattern and elevations much lower were clear so it wasn't entirely a hopeless situation. I got in my car and drove up to the top ot Mt Bache, at an elevation of 3,000 ft, and the tops of the fog layer fortunately were at 2,800 ft. I had clear skies, got set up and on-target in time, and got a recording. I was "feeling lucky" after my against-the-odds success with Alkmene 2 nights earlier. But the odds of a 'hit' here were only 50%. Alas, the coin flip went against me this time. A clean miss. I snapped a few pictures, packed up, and got home in bed by 3am.
