Preston Predictions

Santa Cruz is inside the path for this event, near the northern limit. Odds of a hit are 70% for Kirk and I. The altitude is 27 degrees in azimuth 160. This event has 3 other observers across the country signed up for this, well distributed across the path, so if we can get it, it should provide good astrometry. The target is in Sagittarius, 2 degrees east (left) of globular cluster M22. If you drove up to Sunlit Lane, you'd still be inside the path, odds would be lower; Sunlit lane is at 59%

Results:

We had perfect conditions in Bonny Doon for this one. I drove up and could see Kirk parked by the road about 1/3 mile above the bike trail crossing in Marshall Meadow upper UCSC, but I didn't have time to chat, so continued on up to a turnout on the left side of the road about 2 miles further up, but before Felton-Empire. I got set up and on target without problem, and the target star was decently visible at 16x, and so I used that for the recording. We were inside the nominal limit and should have had an occultation, but both Kirk and I ended up with misses.

PyMovie - target light curve

PyOTE record; 16x, after integration. Target is at bottom, and the random photometric points close to zero are not grouped and so are likely just noise. A miss, and also highly likely since a similar record by Kirk was deeper towards the centerline and he too had a miss.

Kirk Bender

Kirk observed from the field 1/3 mile north of the bike crossing at Upper Meadow UCSC. Good conditions and good recording... of a miss.
