This high rank event happens centrally over Santa Cruz. However, Kirk and I will be returning from the Mojave Desert. If I feel drive-worthy after a very long Saturday, and if Kirk is also wanting... we could try to get this event from just north of Mercey Hot Springs Rd. Karl, I hope, will try it from home. The altitude is only 19 degrees, in the NE in Cancer, below the Beehive Cluster. Alt=19, Az=83, rising.
The drive time from Pisgah Crater is 5hr 17 minutes to this I-5 site. Maybe cook dinner at the crater at sunset, pack up and head out? Or stop at a subway shop in Bakersfield later, or in addition. Or, if too tired, just camp at Rainbow Basin Saturday night and skip the occultation?
We had 3 observers for this one - all clouded out. A weak cold front arrived at exactly the wrong moment, to sprinkle on all 3 of us from our differing locations. If the front had arrived just 20 minutes later, we'd be celebrating.
Kirk and I decided after a very full night and day for the Dimorphos occultation and exploring the Mojave Desert, that we'd like to get Pippa as well, and then have a full Sunday at home to recover. The chosen location for us was off Nees Rd off I-5 in the Central Valley. Skies were clear and conditions looked very good, despite a prediction of clouds coming over the hill about that time. We got Kirk set up, then I drove down to the canal and took the parallel road south for a mile or so before setting myself up. Just after we'd both aligned and gotten the scope on-target, the clouds poured in and that was that. No data. Karl also had the clouds and sprinkles arrive just before he was ready to record from home.
