This event is of moderately decent rank and passes through the Santa Cruz Mtns. The centerline goes over Sunlit Lane at the airport, a perfect observing spot which is my plan. I hope Kirk will do it as well, perhaps from the Eco Preserve or UCSC upper meadow? Karl's on board too, from his place, and also well placed. Centerline odds are 69% for a hit, Karl's at 67% and would be similar for the Bonny Doon Eco Reserve. The event is quick, lasting only 1.5 seconds, so don't integrate too long. It should be doable at 4x, or maybe even 2x if the sky is clean. No moon will interfere. And it's 65 degrees up. Be careful to push the 8SE tube far enough forward to avoid banging the Watec on the Celestron base.
I recorded the event through thin cirrus from Sunlit Lane at the BD Airport. It looks like I had a miss, although a very short event can't be ruled out, given the total central event duration was only 1.5s. I used 4x setting on the Watec camera. Kirk recorded from a few miles south of me, also at 4x. His tape is not yet analyzed. Karl was clouded out from home.
Kirk's observations: A Miss
Nolthenius Observations: A Miss
integration setting 4x, light cloud over the target, varying during the 2 minute record. I used a nearby comparison star as reference, black curve shows smoothed reference curve. Imperfect correction is seen, but still, the observation looks to be a miss. A surprise, since I set up at Sunlit Lane right on the centerline. But the rank was low and odds of a hit were only 69%, so not that unexpected.
Both of us sent in reports to IOTA on Nov 19.
