The Occultation of an 8.2 star by Euboea

This is a bright event, full drop for up to 10 seconds. The problem is that it is only 11 degrees altitude in the southeast, in Libra. Not a lot of time to find and get on target. You'll have to be very careful about finding a site to observe from. One spot that will work is up on the hog back Mt Bache Road. However, this is on the southern 1-sigma line and has a lot odds of a hit. I've been trying to find a location from inside the path but have been unsuccessful. I'm trying to do a long trail run in Pt Reyes tomorrow and though I'd bring the scope gear and try it on the way home. But it means waiting almost till midnight, which doesn't thrill me, and it also has the threat of clouds, so I'm about to give up on it myself. But I'll post the planning page just in case...

From the HogBack the odds of a hit are 8%. From the airport at Half Moon Bay, 39%, and from the centerline in Marin and Oakland, 64%. However, I've still got my Program Plan due late next week and I haven't even started it. I will have to be home working on Sunday, no doubt tired from my Pt Reyes run. So, it's unlikely I'll try it. Too bad; if only it were a little higher odds, a little closer, a little better weather prospects...

I got home from Pt Reyes too late, although I was in a good mood and willing to sacrifice the sleep to go out again and try it. But, couldn't get back from Pt Reyes until 9:15pm; too late to do an hour+ drive to Altamont Pass, call Kirk to come over first, with gear, and stay ahead of the oncoming rain front. I did a big 14 mile trail run at Pt Reyes on the perfect alignment of tides and weather to do this bucket-list little adventure. In hindsight, it would have been probably faster to stay off Hwy 1 and drive by freeway most of the way to San Rafael, and run from the Bear Valley visitor center. But instead I took the scenic route, and with my typically late start in the morning. Hwy 1 is too slow, twisty, and the road to Palomarin is full of potholes and slow backroads.

I did post the planning page and charts Friday night and emailed Kirk and Karl. Karl told me he'd try it. I didn't hear from Kirk. Karl did, from home, even though the odds based on the predictions were only 8%. Still, it had a little extra value because there were two other late station adds, including someone in Europe. Karl got a successful recording, of a miss. Reported 4/2/23 to IOTA.
