The Occultation of a 14.0 Combined by Asteroid (643) Scheherezade

Aug 16 at 10:10pm

This event is faint, but lasts a decent 5s and therefore we can use longer integrations to verify the event and still get enough points to succeed. The rank=90 and the odds for us in the nearby Empire Grade area are 50% for a hit. The altitude is 36 degrees in the east, in Pegasus, and Az=107. Tropical clouds threaten, and fog, but we're hopeful...

We got lucky - Low clouds stayed low, and high clouds avoided western Pegasus, and the uncertain shadow managed to hit all 3 observers; me, Kirk, and Yanzhi in SiValley.

Richard Nolthenius (PyOTE log file)

I set up at upper UCSC meadow on the east side of Empire Grade. Good conditions, it went well. 16x, sharpness=4, Gain=41, Gamma=1 as usual. I got a 4.27s long event at the proper depth. The 15.1 star was very dimly visible on most frames during the occultation.

Observed from "The Berm" on Empire Grade, also got a 4.7s event under good conditions.
