The Occultation of an 11.9 Star by Asteroid (8292) 1992 SU14

Sunday Sept 17, 2023 at 9:33:09pm

This event is of moderate rank, odds near the centerline through Santa Cruz are about 43%. It is rising in the east in central Aquarius, at Alt=29, Az=137. Skies are clear and I and hopefully Karl will give it a try.

Results:

I got a ~1 second occultation under clear dry skies at my carport. Not reduced yet. Kirk stayed at CalStar and didn't attempt it. Karl did, but had trouble getting his 2-star alignment with the red-dot finder mis-alignment.

I used 4x setting, Sharpness=4, Gain=41, Gamma=1.0. Star was bright and easy to see, and well focused, it looked to me. I was missing a lot of the sky, from the edge of my carport, and had to settle for Altair and Enif as my align stars. They're pretty close in the sky, and that risks a bad sky solution and stronger drift. However, I was careful to approach both stars from the same direction to eliminate slack, and the GoTo went well enough, although not perfect. Tracking was good during the event, with slow consistent drift downwards.

I tried using the TME option but it could not keep track of the stars in the bright sky, at 4x setting. I instead used fixed circular apertures, tracking stars on opposite sides of the field, target tracked in the apertures well. It also reappeared inside the circular aperture so the aperture did not wander much during the deep occultation. The event happened right on time, and lasted 1.01 seconds.
