The Occultation of an R=12.2 Star by Asteroid 1999JX59

May 24, 2024 at 11:14pm

This event again parallels Highland Way, a bit further north than the previous night's 2001MD28 event. Karl's place is just a big below the southern limit, but still with a significant chance of a 'hit'. The plan is to meet at his place, kick off the Memorial Day Weekend with some comradry, and then at 10:15pm head out to man our stations. The star is medium bright, 46 degrees above the horizon due south Az=182, and 54 degrees from the rising 97% moon which at event time is only 10 degrees above the horizon. Clouds from an advancing low pressure will be a problem.

Kirk and I packed gear and headed to Karl's in the mountains, early enough to socialize, much chips and bean dip, and perhaps watch an "X Files" episode while we waited to see if the clouds would clear. The advance satellite images said the tops of the clouds were above 3,000 ft and hence not going to be do-able. This was a cold front band moving down, not just fog coming up. So, we gave up and just watched two "X Files" episodes instead, and talked of many things. One thing also, we reviewed Karl's video recording of the 2001MD28 video, and it was surprisingly (for me) really clear and showed a definite 1/4s event, as he had claimed. It also came a second or so early, just as my own did. It looks like I ended up being closer to the centerline, with a 0.56s event to Karl's ~1/4s (not reduced yet).
