The Occultation of a R=11.4 Star by Asteroid Lallaward

Fri eve June 7, 2024 at 10:56:54pm

This event by a 5.4km asteroid parallels Summit Rd/Highland Way along the Santa Cruz Mtns spine. Nominal probability odds for a positive for Karl's home and my spot at the top of Mtn Charlie are 100%. The event is only 15 degrees up in the SE, at Az=137, so Karl may have to drive up to another overlook along Highland to get that low a horizon (?). The duration is 0.6s and so hopefully a 2x integration will get plenty enough points to verify a positive.

At 15 degrees altitude, the 11.4 star will look like a 12.2 star would look if overhead; there's 0.8 mag of differential extinction.

This is the second of two events tonight, the first being by asteroid Libussa, which has a wide path that includes Ted Swift, the South Bay group, and basically everything east of downtown Santa Cruz inside the path. My best bet for a site is the red Realty place on Hwy 17 just south of the summit, for both events. Kirk will not be available, Karl is game to go for it.

I arrived at the Red Realty place on Hwy 17 to find fog was already at this elevation. I continued on another 20 minutes to get to the HogBack on Loma Prieta Rd. I set up at the turnout overlook just beyond the start of the ridge. for Libussa, got on target, but it drifted, and there was some cloud in Leo which didn't help, and I was not able to re-acquire the target and see it on the Watec screen until 3 minutes after the event. I then set the scope onto the Lallaward target successfully, and waited till the event. I believe I got a 0.46s positive with a couple of seconds of the prediction. I set integration at 4x and got a very clear event.

Kirk Bender

Was fogged out at Garland Park in Carmel Valley for a star party, but outside the path anyway. Did not attempt.

Karl von Ahnen

At home, did not attempt, after being fogged out an hour earlier at home for Libussa.
