The Occultation of a R=13.1 Combined Star by Asteroid Libussa

Fri eve June 7, 2024 at 9:56:55pm

This event has a wide path and long duration of 3.2s, and very high rank and odds of 100% for our sites, nominally. The sun is -15 so it's just finally gotten dark. The star is in Leo, 46 degrees up at Az=252.

Depending on fog intrusion, I'll either try both Libussa and Lallaward from the red Realty place on Hwy 17 near Summit, or else at the HogBack on Loma Prieta Rd.

Take time to notice the 4% moon low in the west above the fog - could be photogenic!

I planned to go to the red Realty place on Hwy 17, but on arrival, fog already reached this level, so I had to go further, up to the HogBack on Loma Prieta Rd. I now had little time. I got on target, but by the time I inserted the Watec it had drifted off, and I was not able to find the target on the Watec again until a couple minutes AFTER the event. But, playback shows the target was not on he chip. it'll be a red "fumble" for me, for not allowing enough time to get to my back-up site and allow for trouble adequately.

Was at Garland Ranch for a star party in Carmel Valley. Did not observe, and the fog got the star party too. No attempt.

Set up, but fog came in just before the event. From my vantage above Karl on the HogBack, it looked like the fog reached up to about 1700 ft, which is 100 ft above Karl's place. Bad luck. A purple 'valiant attempt' is in order.
