This is a bright event and only visible from the Loma Prieta Mtn area. Suitable for a social and then drive up Mt Bache to get it from the dirt roads near Loma Prieta Peak. Fog looks to obscure all below the Hog Back

Alt=40, Az=262 in Northern Cancer, in the western sky

We all got recordings, from near the top of Loma Prieta Peak - Karl, Kirk, and I. Clean skies above the fog. Wind, however, for Karl and Kirk. My site was calm.

I set up on Mt Umenum Rd at the gate, which turned out to be on the exact predicted centerline. Loma Prieta Peak was just up north of me, by less than a mile. It was calm, no wind interference for me. I integrated at 1x. I set PyMovie to do median filtering but forgot to check the box for "both horizontal and vertical". No matter, the signal on the light curve was quite strong. The mask was set at 3.2px, which was enough to minimize any saw-toothing. I got a solid positive. The NIE histograms were separated by 19.9 sigma.

I don't see an event for 1997 LO3 on Loma Prieta Rd, at 1x. There was a lot of wind shake, even though I was near a tree. I used dynamic apertures in pymovie and normalized on a tracking star but still a lot of noise in the light curve. Predicted max duration was 0.23 sec. Pyote detectability tool reported:"An event of duration 0.200 seconds with magDrop: 7.1 is likely detectable." My station was nearer the southern limit, and not close to the centerline. So a miss, or too short, or obscured by wind shake noise.

Set up at the open gate at the beginning of Mt Umenum Rd, just past the turn off to Loma Prieta Peak radio towers. We all looked at Karl's video tape right after the event. It looked like a miss. However, my 0.13s event was so quick it was almost not visible by eye as PyMovie was analyzing.

April 30 11:12:10 1197 LO3 from Loma Prieta, clear, dark (thin crescent moon), cool, dry, fairly good seeing, windy, used 1/60, no noticeable blink; Google Earth coordinates: 37deg 06’ 19.82” N , 121deg 50’ 53.34” W elev=3346 ft; processing: tried many apertures and mask sizes. used dynamic aperture. Wind made it difficult, but still looks like a miss.
