The Occultation of a W=10.5 Star by Asteroid () Parini

This is an easy event if the clouds and winds cooperate. Probably a last second decision depending on the rapid movement of the cold low pressure post-front clouds advance across the skies. The path cuts across the old Cemex plant in Davenport, probably the best choice for a site (then maybe dinner at Costa Azul??).

Alt=74, Az=161.

So, the altitude will be very slightly rising going into the event. 74 degrees is on the ragged edge of being do-able with the standard straight-through configuration. The altitude will be lower during set up and that's good.

The last minute clouds looked to favor going to Felton for this, and also saving driving time. I got back from errands later than I hoped and it was a mad dash. I'd hoped to enlist Kirk, but I didn't contact him in time. I drove up Graham Hill to set up at the green belt park access across from the Safeway. What I didn't expect, was the nightmare clog of rush hour traffic returning from over the hill. Stuck in long lines behind red traffic lights and I could see I'd miss it if I stayed. Desperate to set up SOMEWHERE that I could park, I managed to do an illegal exit and ended up in the liquor store parking slots in the Safeway shopping center. I got set up in a hurry, no time to try to locate the target area in the brilliantly lit parking lot in the eyepiece, so after the GoTo I went straight to the Watec. Took about a minute or two to ID the stars, and the target was not on the chip. I got to it in time, started recording at 2x and left it there. The occultation was about 1/2s and easy to spot live.
