Warren Scott Santa Cruz Triathlon
July 10, 2005
The old Monterey Bay Challenge was taken over by Mike Bennet's ByTheBeach productions. Unlike the old days, it had an Olympic distance event this time. I joined my long time triathlon compadre Rick Ferrell and other local racers. Still hobbled on my bad hip, I did only the swim. However, getting to/from the swim should've been an event in itself - about a 2 mile walk to the start. And the swim was WAY long - about 1.2 miles instead of 1.5k, from my time (34:50), and 1.2 to 1.25 miles according to top ten finisher Pat Williams. Did the measuring guy think he was setting out a half Ironman? Did he set the parallel to shore distance at 1.5k and forgot about the out/in legs? Don't know, but it did mess with our pacing.
