Cabrillo College Observatory ClearSkyClock    5-day forecast

2025

May 19 - Mon eve 10:24pm - Occultation of 4.7 magnitude 37 Leonis by 1998 DW12, from Hwy 1 on Big Sur coast south of Garrapata State Beach. Fog would be fatal. In case of fog, the next best spot is on Jolon Rd SW of King City, halfway to San Antonio Lake. Trip is still tentative, pending time and transportation, and weather. Planning page Results: Fog looked to be closing in on the Big Sur sites, so we abandoned our effort.

May 21 - Wed morn 12:40am ? - Occultation of a 15.7 Star by Quaoar. The path is north of us, but the ring might be do-able in a dark sky in BD? 62s duration for Quaoar itself but we do not have a chance at that. The calc's I've made on the planning page say this event is not possible. Planning page

May 23 - Fri morn 12:24am - Occultation of a W=5.5 Star by Asteroid Johnpenna - from Jolon Rd near Lake San Antonio.

May 23 - Fri eve - dinner w/ Kent and Barb

May 24 Sat - 5:30pm Dinner, then give talk on Asteroid Astronomy for MIRA at Monterey Peninsula College.

Jun 3 - 4-5pm Tue - UCSC-CAN meeting on Zoom. See May 13 email from Alexei.

Jun 10 10:46pm - Wide path occultation of Euphrosyne. Includes MIRA near centerline, we're well inside, so is Ted Swift. Planning page. Dur=30s. Full moon night.

Jun 12 1:48am - Quaoar occultation across Central California. Included MIRA, and the northern limit nominally crosses over Karl. 47s duration, mag=15.5. But 99% moon only 14 degrees away (!). Alt=38, Az=south. Long integration to get this faint star will be perhaps impossible with such a bright moon so close. Remove f/3.3 reducer and maybe it'll work?? Planning page

Jun 16 Mon eve   - Occultation of a 9.8 Star by Emita. Entire SC and SC Mtns inside the shadow. Dur=6.2s, Alt=31, Az=237 in Virgo. Planning page
June 16 Mon eve - Occultation of 8.7 Star by (1001) Gaussia - entire Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz. Planning page

Jun 17 Tue eve 10:55pm - Occultation of a 8.4 mag star by Madeline - from Santa Cruz and SC Mtns. All of "team santa cruz" inside the path of this bright event.  Planning page

Jun 20 Fri eve 11:21pm - Occultation of a 11.6 star by Shimizu, from Santa Cruz and SC Mtns. Wide path includes Karl. Planning page

Jun 26 Thur 1:59am - Occultation of a 13.5 Star by Bangsgaard, from northern Santa Cruz and mtns. Planning page

Jun 29 6pm Mars misses 24+ moon in late afternoon by just a few arcmin. Graze path steep misses off the coast, would have to go to Baja. Photo op only.

July 7 - Mon morn 3:30am - Occultation of a 12.4 Star by RECON Trojan asteroid Achates. And, according to the path on the RECON page. The path is high rank and goes from Carrizo Plain and NE from there.   I will try to reserve a van for this special event.

Aug 9 - Bear Creek Half Marathon

Aug 16 - June Lake Triathlon

Aug 23 - Double DipSea Race

Sept 7 - GraniteMan Challenge

Oct 4 - Auburn Half Marathon

Oct 9 - Thur 6-9pm - Astro 25 pre-trip meeting

Oct 17-19 - Fall Astro 25 course. Destination TBA.
Oct 18 - Mt Diablo Summit Stomp (can't do it this  year)

Oct 23 12:49am - Occultation of a 13.7 Star for 13 s by Jupiter outer moon Himalia. MIRA 36" inside the northern limit. Could get interesting topography record?

Oct 25 - Sat eve 10:53pm - Occultation of a 9.9 star by NEA Object (98943) 2001 CC21. High value! Bright star! Weekend! This should be a prime target for a Fall trip by Team Santa Cruz. Planning page. Duration 0.12s is long enough for 1x recording to get a good S/N detection and

Nov 19 3:09am - Occultation of a 15.0 Star by TNO Bienor, from the tip of Pt Conception only. 21s duration. High risk, tough.

November Late- mid December: Saturn's rings are less than 0.5 degree inclined, but still bright because now sunlit again.

Dec 5 10:01pm - Occultation by Trojan Asteroid (1173) Anchesis, of 14.6 mag star for 19s. Through Southern Anza Borrego desert and N limit at Needles. Apply for van (maybe they'll still give us one?). Cold nights but perhaps OK sunny days?

Dec 13 at 12:22am - Occultation of a Jupiter satellite Elara from Marin and Fairfield/Davis area.
